Der Aufbruch
Ich befahl mein Pferd aus dem Stall zu holen. Der Diener verstand mich nicht. Ich ging selbst in den Stall, sattelte mein Pferd und bestieg es. In der Ferne hörte ich eine Trompete blasen, ich fragte ihn, was das bedeutete. Er wusste nichts und hatte nichts gehört. Beim Tore hielt er mich auf und fragte: »Wohin reitet der Herr?« »Ich weiß es nicht«, sagte ich, »nur weg von hier, nur weg von hier. Immerfort weg von hier, nur so kann ich mein Ziel erreichen.« »Du kennst also dein Ziel«, fragte er. »Ja«, antwortete ich, »ich sagte es doch: ›Weg-von-hier‹ – das ist mein Ziel.« »Du hast keinen Eßvorrat mit«, sagte er. »Ich brauche keinen«, sagte ich, »die Reise ist so lang, daß ich verhungern muß, wenn ich auf dem Weg nichts bekomme. Kein Eßvorrat kann mich retten. Es ist ja zum Glück eine wahrhaft ungeheure Reise.«
The departure*
I ordered my horse out of the stable. The servant didn’t understand me. I went into the stable myself, saddled my horse and mounted it. I heard a trumpet blowing in the distance and asked him what it meant. He knew nothing and had heard nothing. He stopped me at the gate and asked: “Where is My Lord riding to?” “I don’t know,” I said, “just away from here, just away from here. Always away from here, that’s the only way I can reach my destination.” “So you know your destination,” he asked. “Yes,” I replied, “I told you: ‘Away-from-here’ – that’s my goal.” “You don’t have any food with you,” he said. “I don’t need any,” I said, “the journey is so long that I’ll starve if I don’t get anything on the way. No amount of food can save me. Fortunately**, it is a truly tremendous journey.”
* How on earth to save the ambiguity of the German word “Aufbruch“?
Aufbruch = departure, exit, retreat
– im Aufbruch begriffen sein = about to leave
– das Zeichen zum Aufbruch geben = give the departure signal
Aufbruch = emergence, awakening, awareness
– im Aufbruch sein = being on the rise, awakening
– eine Zeit des Aufbruchs = a time of profound change, of reversal
** ‘zum Glück‘ : grammatically it can also mean ‘toward happiness’
